2016 Gerard Bertrand Clos d'Ora, Languedoc France
Clos d'Ora is an emerging superstar Languedoc red of La Liviniere in the Minervois. It is the culmination of a dream to capture the special terroir, and the spiritual experience Bertrand felt when he first saw Clos d'Ora in 1997. The nine-hectare stone-walled vineyard already contained old-vine carignan and grenache, Bertrand added syrah and Mourvedre, all farmed biodynamically. At 220 metres above sea level, the chalk, sandstone and marl soils are cultivated by horses, and the grape varieties harvested and macerated separately in concrete before heading to French oak for twelve months. I love the energy and the lift of this substantial red, with its long, savoury black plum and boysenberry palate flecked with anise, tobacco, figs, and garrigue. Nowhere near ready to drink, but perfectly designed to cellar a decade or more until the full picture is revealed. Outstanding.
94 Points Robert Parker.
